Tuition fees
Tuition fees for higher education are the enrolment fees you pay to be allowed to study. The exact amount you pay depends on various factors:
- whether you meet the financial requirements set by the Department of Scholarships (‘afdeling Studietoelagen’) of the Flemish Community to qualify for a study grant and therefore also a reduction of the tuition fee;
- the number of credits you enrol for (only if you are eligible for a study grant or almost);
- the balance of your learning credit (‘leerkrediet’) (only for students who are not eligible for a study grant).
There are three rates that apply:
-
1
The near-scholarship rate
You pay this intermediate rate if the income, that the Department of Scholarships (‘afdeling Studietoelagen’) uses to make the calculation for the study grant, is not more than € 3,285 (amount for 2021-2022) above the maximum income border. You are also entitled to this rate if you are not eligible for a study grant from the Flemish Community because your parents own a second property and you are rejected on the basis of the taxation of this additional property (‘Kadastraal Inkomen or KI’).
-
2
The scholarship rate
This is the lowest rate and is always a fixed amount, regardless of your learning credit or the number of credits you register for. You pay this fee if you meet the financial requirements set by the Department of Scholarships (‘afdeling Studietoelagen’) and if you also fulfill the nationality conditions.
Please note! In this case, you will usually also be entitled to a study grant from the Flemish Community.

STEP 3
You will be asked to provide documentation to support your credit application. All documents must be in English, French or Dutch. Any translations must be formally certified by the University.
You will need to provide in hard copy:- Evidence of modules completed and marks/ grades gained (usually a transcript)
- Evidence of the equivalency of the learning outcomes (for example a content list). Good quality copies or scanned versions may be used. Original documents are sent at the owner’s risk.
- You may need to include with your application the syllabi and exam papers for each module relevant to your application.
- From mid-August onwards more information on how to apply for exemptions can be found on the website.
How and when do I pay my tuition fee?
After your enrolment or re-enrolment has been processed by Student Administrative Services Centre, you will receive an invoice for your tuition fees by e-mail.
In the first phase, you will receive the first invoice for fthe fixed sum of the tuition fee. After approval of your Individual Study Programme (ISP), you will receive a second invoice by e-mail. This second invoice is based on the number of credits you register for that academic year.
You pay your tuition fees by bank transfer before the due date mentioned on the invoice.
The are other, programme-specific costs that you must take into account as well as your tuition fees. The costs vary per programme. If you meet the income requirements for a study grant from the Flemish Community, you can enrol at a reduced rate for the tuition fees: the scholarship rate.
